Lilium-SPOT granted Good Design Award 2019

Lilium Otsuka Co., Ltd. has received the 2019 Good Design Award from the Japan Institute of Design Promotion for its Lilium-SPOT® device that supports prediction of urination timing device.

Lilium-SPOT® has been on sale since December 27, 2018, as a product that uses ultrasound technology to check the accumulation of urine in the bladder and support the prediction of the timing of urination. It is a non-medical device that can easily check the level of urine accumulation on a scale display by applying ultrasound to the position of the bladder, and is equipped with a voice guidance function to make it easy to use for first-time users.

As Japan becomes a super-aged society, the need for incontinence care is increasing in nursing care facilities. Utilizing the know-how we have cultivated through the development of medical devices, we have been developing products that can be used not only by medical professionals but also by people who have trouble urinating, their families, and nursing staff. We hope that this product will be used in nursing homes and homes to improve the efficiency of nursing care, reduce the burden, and improve the QOL of those who need care.

Reasons for the award (comments from the judges)

• As a product related to excretion, the concept is clearly expressed from the viewpoint of 'maintaining dignity', from the significance of the product's existence to the detailed specifications of the product.
• The concept is consistent with a design that assumes personal use and reflects legal considerations applicable to non-medical devices, as well as the fact that products that are expensive in the medical settings can be easily purchased by individuals, which is a great value.

What is the Good Design Award?
The Good Design Award is the only comprehensive design evaluation and recommendation movement in Japan, succeeding the "Good Design Product Selection System" (commonly known as the G mark system) established in 1957. The Good Design Award is supported by many people as an activity to improve our lives and society through design, and has been widely popular with the G Mark symbol.
